This hotel is a lovely old lady, given a makeover some time ago in Art Deco style and retaining a sense of old world grace. There are some fabulously interesting pieces of furniture all over the building, and the chandeliers in the dining room are deeply impressive, if you like chandeliers. And that's the problem - it's dated and struggling to be a five star hotel with what it offers, which is old fashioned elegance and not much else. Being in the centre, it's noisy at night, it has a rather cramped courtyard at its heart with plants which look a bit weary and a greenish pond. The breakfast is fantastic, lots of choice and the staff are very attentive and sweet, and it's served under the enormous chandeliers. Dinner was delicious, but the dining room can seat over 100 and there were six of us. I understand it's so hard to change or update such old ladies as this hotel and she definitely has charm, but paying five star prices is a strain for patrons.
Top Tip
The hotel is well placed for seeing the city and in walking distance of the waterfront and bridges to the port cellars on the other side. There are a number of restaurants nearby, different styles and prices but good to excellent food. The tour buses stop very nearby, and shopping streets with small jewellers and antiques are just round the corner.

We stayed 2 nights in room 212 on the second floor and were kept awake on both nights thoughout the night by drunken shouting and cars revving until 6am each morning. We complained to the consierge who said he had many complaints from other guests and that he had called the police on 15 occasions to no effect. He asked us to leave a written complaint which we duly did.It is clear this is a common occurrance and therefore I feel the hotel should take further measures, either night guards or very efficient double glazing

A wonderful hotel in the centre of the historic area of Porto.
We booked two double bedrooms one had a 5 foot bed and the other a 4 foot bed. Check this aspect of your booking.

I would recommend taking the open top tour of the city to give you an idea of your location. From that you can decide on the places you might like to visit in more detail.

Great hotel! friendly, helpful staff.. really really clean and only a short walk to the river.
Top Tip
Metro really easy to use.. and the '500' bus goes straight to the beach (literally takes 10 minutes) with not too many stops.
On the othe side of the river - the side with all the port cellars - keep walking down and you'll come to some restaurants - great food and ambience.. looks and feels posh - but price is reasonable.

Great Hotel. May be beginning to fade a bit at the edges.Needs a lick of paint.
The staff were polite and helpful.
Top Tip
Portuguese food poor. No wonder they had such a large maritime empire-they were scouring the earth looking for a decent meal.
Still, the people and the ambiance went a long long way towards compensating.

Hotel is well situated for most things - shops - sight seeing -restaurents etc. There is a fair amount of walking although the public transport is very good.
Top Tip
To eat like the local people try the cafe next door.Excellent choice and value for money. Visits to the port houses are a must.
